Mission Accomplished for the First GPO 2010

The FFSA prepared an intense weekend of racing, on the occasion of its first Grand Prix Open Karting of the season, on the international circuit of Varennes-sur-Allier. Flawless presentation, top-level drivers in the “Nationale” category with several coups de theatre: the French Karting Championship 2010 started under the best auspices for clamorous success.

KZ2, with its powerful 125 gearbox karts, was marked by a duel at the top between Anthony Abbasse (Sodi/TM) and Jérémy Iglesias (Intrepid/TM), while in KF3, junior drivers witnessed an intense fight between Anthoine Hubert (Tony Kart/Vortex) and Pierre Gasly (Sodi/Parilla). In both cases, several other drivers had a chance to be actively involved in the battle. In KF2, where the most promising drivers are found, the fight remained more opened, with a series of coup de theatre that rendered the outcome uncertain. Vincent Fraïsse (Intrepid/TM) and Enzo Guibbert (FA Kart/Vortex) distinguished themselves for their ability.

Day 1: Saturday 29 May.

Anthony Abbasse (Sodi/TM) conquered the pole position in timed qualifying in KZ2, Jérémy Iglesias (Intrepid/TM) won the pre-final and Abbasse answered back in the final race: the tone was set. Yan Pesce (Energy/TM) and Yannick Savard (CRG/Maxter) emerged as the best outsiders.

Anthoine Hubert (Tony Kart/Vortex) dominated KF3 by winning everything, from timed qualifying to the final race, but received a three-place penalty after a tough duel with his favourite rival, Pierre Gasly (Sodi/Parilla), who inherited the first place. Léo Roussel (Sodi/Parilla) finished second ahead of Hubert Petit (FA Kart/Vortex) and Enzo Marchetti (Sodi/Parilla).

Pascal Belmaaziz (Intrepid/TM) defeated his little friends on the line with the best time in KF2 timed qualifying. A collision mixed things up at the start of the pre-final and it was Vincent Fraïsse (Intrepid/TM) who took advantage of the situation to win the race ahead of Victor Sendin (Tony Kart/Vortex). Fraïsse doubled the stake and imposed himself on the final ahead of Belgian Denis Dupont (Tony Kart/Vortex), but Enzo Guibbert (FA Kart/Vortex) and Clément Bluy (Tony Kart/Vortex) skilfully regained 3rd and 4th place.

Day 2: Sunday 30 May

Rain cooled down the atmosphere during the night, but the next day, races started on an almost completely dry track, apart from a few light showers.

Following the same order as Day 1: Iglesias and Abbasse in KZ2, with a pole for the former. Savard made sparks fly at the start of the pre-final, before slowing down the rhythm, exhausted by the effort. Abbasse won the pre-final and preceded Iglesias, Pesce and Italian Simone Brenna (TB Kart/TM). A subtle strategist, Abbasse perfectly managed the final race by mastering his kart, while Iglesias had to give up. Pesce gained the second place in his homeland and Emilien Grosso (Intrepid/TM) was third, and very happy to be back on the podium – at last – at this level.

Gasly celebrated in KF3 with a perfect score. Hubert was pushed out on the first turn of the pre-final. Enzo Marchetti and Rémy Deguffroy fought hard for the second place. In the final race, Valentin Moineault (Merlin/Parilla) decided to take part to the fight for victory during a long duel with Gasly. More experienced, Gasly perfectly managed his race and won. Hubert had to work hard to regain ground and reach the third step of the podium.  

This time, Enzo Guibbert could finally make to the top! He lost time after a collision in the pre-final after setting the best time, but inexorably went back up in the final race and left all his rivals behind. Sendin won the pre-final in the rain, Bluy finished second and was second again in the final. Fraïsse was third in the final race and scored some heavy points in the Championship.
