Walther starts on OK-Junior pole position in Campillos

Qualifying Practice for the FIA Karting World Championship – Junior started at Campillos on Friday afternoon, alternating with the OK category. The sky was not fully clear, but the temperature was close to 20° and the track was completely dry. The 101 drivers present waited almost four minutes before starting.

In the first session, David Walther (Tony Kart/Vortex) was in the lead against his Koski Motorsport team-mate Dmitry Matveev (Tony Kart/Vortex) and Tomass Stolcermanis (Energy/TM). Walther finished in the lead with a fourth lap of 1’01”687, a tenth ahead of Matveev. Stolcermanis finished 3rd, a thousandth behind. Kirill Dzitiev (Tony Kart/Vortex) was 4th followed by Keanu Al Azhari (Tony Kart/Vortex).

Marcus Saeter (Tony Kart/Vortex) was fastest in the second session before Anatoly Khavlkin (Parolin/TM) broke the 1’02 barrier. Things then got faster and faster until Maksimilian Popov (Tony Kart/Vortex) finished with 1’01”711 on his fifth run, 18 thousandths ahead of Saeter. Enzo Deligny (Parolin/TM) was 3rd at 0.131” ahead of Miguel Costa (KR/Iame) and German Foteev (Tony Kart/Vortex).

Alex Powell (KR/Iame) led the third session, going under 62″ on his second lap. Matheus Ferreira (KR/Iame) took the lead on the third lap and improved to 1’01”753 by the end of the session. René Lammers (Parolin/TM) finished 2nd at 44 thousandths, followed by Powell at 4 thousandths. Akshay Bohra (KR/Iame) was 4th, a tenth behind Ferreira, and Dion Gowda 5th. Jules Champigny Roussel (Sodi/TM) was 23rd.

Freddie Slater (Kosmic/Vortex) was expected to challenge Ferreira for the provisional pole position in the fourth session. The last participants started a little earlier than their predecessors. Slater was the first to get really close to the 1’01”7 mark on his third run and improved on the next lap. Matias Orjuela (Parolin/TM) and James Egozi (Tony Kart/Vortex) followed him. Slater finished in the lead but remained 2nd overall by 11 thousandths with his time of 1’01”698. This was a significant improvement on the previous week’s Champions of the Future, where he had finished 40th. The same goes for Egozi, who was 2nd, a tenth behind. Orjuela was strong in 3rd place ahead of Arthur Dorison (Tony Kart/Vortex) and Maciej Gladysz (Exprit/TM). Karel Schulz did well in 14th place.
