Choices of dates to make on the American continent

December 2021 is going to be busier than expected. Last week the FIA made official the move of the OK and Junior World Championship, originally scheduled for 28-31 October 2021 in Brazil, to Birigüi. No explanation has been given, with some people having only noted for several months the competition for dates with the FIA Motorsport Games from 29 to 31 October in France on the Paul Ricard circuit and its surroundings, which this year will host four karting disciplines: slalom, endurance, junior sprint and senior sprint.

The World Championship is now scheduled for 1-5 December, again in Birigüi. This also happens to be the new date that SKUSA was forced to set for its 24th annual SuperNationals, the world’s largest driver’s race in the parking lot of the Rio Hotel in Las Vegas. It was the shifting of the World Series of Poker to the dates SKUSA had previously booked that forced the Californian organiser to move the event. What will be the reaction of the drivers from the American continent who wanted to participate in these two big races, nobody knows at the moment.

The situation is not easy in Brazil either, as the new FIA Karting programme is very close to the Brazilian Championship, which is scheduled to take place in two phases, from 6 to 11 December, and then from 13 to 18 December at the Kartodromo Beto Carrero, almost 900 km from Birigüi. The Brazilian Championship has been maintained by the sporting authorities, but adjustments will be necessary for the OK and OK-Junior categories.

For once international karting is moving to the South American continent, it is a real shame to have to face such unintentional scheduling problems, which can only be detrimental to the competition as a whole.
