Large cutbacks in Genk on the background of coronavirus

70 participants are present in Genk for the 2nd round of the European KZ/KZ2 Championship and the Academy Trophy. This figure is to be compared with the 141 registered and 115 participants of the 1st meeting in Adria three weeks ago.

The main reason for this unprecedented defection is to be found in the Covid-19 and more particularly in the new health precautions requested by the Belgian authorities to be able to enter the Genk circuit. The production of a PCR test in the 72 hours prior to arrival at the circuit is a constraint that is sometimes difficult to manage depending on the time required to obtain results depending on the country and even the region.

However, one cannot help thinking that this has also “discouraged” some drivers no longer fighting for European titles from making the trip to Belgium. On the other hand, the sequence with the FIA Karting meeting in Wackersdorf (where new tests are also required) next week does not make the task of some teams any easier.

With 12 KZ, 32 KZ2 and 26 Academy drivers, the Genk 2020 plateau may go down in history, but not for the right reasons…
