FIA Karting: a new rule for qualifying practice

From this weekend, during the second round of the FIA Karting European Championship – OK & Junior, the classification of the qualifying practice will be made by systematically alternating the positions of each series. The famous 101% rule intended to compensate for possible variations in track conditions beyond a 1% gap will disappear. After WSK, other series had adopted this system which seems to be favoured by the big teams. It was at their request that the CIK-FIA changed its rules.

For the record, the fastest take the pole, then the second is the best of the second series and the third is the best time of the third series, etc.  Then come the second of each series, the third and so on. This is correcting the smallest differences in grip conditions, but also gives an advantage to the slower series, without this necessarily being linked to the evolution of the track. So, fairer then? Maybe, but not always… That’s how the competition goes!
