Jonny Edgar and Harry Thompson moving on

Red Bull Juniors Harry Thompson and Jonny Edgar both had great success in 2018 with Thompson being named 2018 FIA Karting Rookie of the Year after finishing second in the European Championship and Edgar completing his Karting career with victory in the SKUSA SummerNationals Senior X30 Championship.

Both featured in a number of top championships, 14-year-old Briton Edgar was very much in the hunt in the CIK FIA World Championships in Kristianstad, Sweden but took a knock when his engine failed in a heat. He had his best victories in the US.

Similarly, 14-year-old fellow Brit Thompson clinched the German Championship (Deutschen Kart-Meisterschaft) and was unlucky in both the CIK FIA World Championship and IAME World Finals.

In the last few months I competed in the CIK FIA World Championship but failed to finish due to a technical problem while in 5th place in the final,” explains Thompson. “I also competed in the IAME World Finals in Le Mans and after starting on pole for the final was involved in a racing incident that pushed back back to P22 but managed to come back and crossed the line fourth.

The best results I had this year was 2nd in the European Champs and winning the DKM German championship. Although the last few races have been difficult and I haven’t got the results I was hoping for I am confident going into 2019. So I am really looking forward to another season in the European Championship with Ricky Flynn Motorsport and I will be contesting the British Championship with Fusion Motorsport who I raced with in the IAME World Finals,” enthused Thompson.

Jonny Edgar wins across the Atlantic

Following the conclusion of the European Championships in early August,” explains Edgar. “I travelled to Indianapolis to compete in the SKUSA SummerNationals at Newcastle Raceway, where I won the Senior X30 Championship.”

The CIK FIA World Championships in Kristianstad, Sweden, in September, marked my last kart race and the end of an era. This meeting provided both highs and lows; an engine failure in one of my heats meant I started the Final from grid 23 rather than on row 3. Determined to go out on a high, I made my way through the field and crossed the line in 5th place. Definitely a case of what could have been.”

I’m now training hard and looking forward to a new chapter and to the challenges that 2019 will bring!” explained the youngster who steps up to F4 in 2019, contesting the FIA Formula 4 Italian Championship and selected race meetings in the German F4 ADAC Championship racing for Jenzer Motorsport.
