The Final of the World Junior Championship started under a blue sky in very windy conditions after a very nice presentation ceremony in Sweden.

It was a good start for poleman Taylor Barnard (KR / Parilla) in front of Kai Askey (FA Kart / Vortex) Dino Beganovic (Tony Kart / Vortex) and Victor Bernier (Kosmic / Parilla). Gabriele Mini’ (Parolin / TM) had already regained two positions in 5th place. Beganovic took 2nd, Gabriel Bortoleto lost two places to 6th place and Paul Aron (FA Kart / Vortex) came back to 7th (+4). Askey was 5th behind Mini’, Bernier posted a faster time and attacked Beganovic for 2nd place. The Frenchman quickly returned to Taylor and attacked him on lap 5. The Brit responded, but Bernier managed to overtake him on the next lap. Mini’ took the opportunity to take 3rd place at the expense of Bortoleto, who reacted immediately.

At the halfway mark, Bortoleto, 3rd, was the fastest, but Bernier increased his lead to 7 tenths on Barnard. The battle for 2nd place turned to the advantage of Bortoleto who started in pursuit of Bernier with eight laps to go. The leader was giving everything he could and posted the fastest lap again. On lap 16 Mini’ moved into the top three by passing Barnard. Further back, Marcus Amand (KR / Parilla) was back in 6th position and Suleiman Zanfari (Tony Kart / Vortex) was nearing the top 10 after a 10-place gain.

Bernier steadily increased his lead by hundredths of a second, while Mini’ attacked Bortoleto for 2nd place. After a very good race full of sportsmanship, Victor Bernier impressively won the 2018 FIA Junior Karting World Championship at Kristianstad. Mini’ and Bortoleto completed the top three ahead of Barnard, followed by Kirill Smal (Tony Kart / Vortex), up 10 places and the fastest lapper.
