Ten Brinke on the second step of the podium at Lonato

Eight RFM drivers participated in the WSK Open Cup at the legendary South Garda Karting circuit in Lonato, and best result of the British team was from the young Dutchman Thomas Ten Brinke, 2nd in OK-Junior while the excellent performances of his team-mates were not always rewarded because of several unfortunate setbacks.

With 67 participants, the OK-Junior category was a global confrontation. Thomas Ten Brinke made a solid run in the top three of the heats after his 6th time in Qualifying. Ranked 3rd in Prefinal B behind Kai Askey, he increased his effort in the Final to move out of a frenzied group in 2nd place, his best result to date in international competition. After a good Prefinal performance, Askey lost ground in the Final battle and finished 9th behind Conrad Laursen, who moved up well and was the winner of a heat. Zak O’Sullivan also recovered after being dropped in one heat. He regained a total of eight places in the Finals and reached a top creditable top five. The impressive trajectory of Paul Aron, 7th at the end of the heats, was interrupted by an retirement after only six laps in the Final. Another retirement this time deprived Matthew Rees of Final qualification.

The performance was there in OK with three heat wins by Harry Thompson, followed by a series of 2nd places for Zane Maloney. The driver from Barbados unfortunately did not finish the Prefinal, while the Briton dropped to 6th position. Thompson didn’t finish the Final, while Maloney delighted in overtaking to return from 29th to 6th position at the chequered flag. A penalty dropped him down to 12th place, still a significant gain of 17 places.

The beginning of July promises to be calmer in terms of races before the fourth round of the German Championship at Kerpen and especially the conclusion of the European Championship at the start of August at Essay (FRA).
