OK-Junior – Oviedo: Michelotto wins a breathtaking finale

Under the low and grey skies of Oviedo, some very fine rain drops fall on the Alonso circuit without really changing the progress of the Spanish Final of the CIK-FIA Junior European Championship.

Zane Maloney (FA Kart / Vortex) and Harry Thompson (FA Kart / Vortex) took the lead in the race by dislodging Christopher Lulham (Tony Kart / Parilla). Ilya Morozov (Tony Kart / Vortex) and Hadrien David (Zanardi / Parilla) completed the top five at the beginning of the race. We followed the rises of Mattia Michelotto (Zanardi / Parilla), Jack Doohan (FA Kart / Vortex), Hugo Sasse (CRG / Parilla) and also Jonny Edgar (Exprit / TM).

David had to retire soon after being hit by Ayrton Fontecha (CRG / Parilla). As Thompson took over, Maloney was pushed into the grass and was losing ground. Lulham returned to attack Thompson over a fairly long time. Edgar then took 2nd place behind Thompson, Morozov running 3rd before being supplanted by Lulham.

Things were lively in the final laps with the return of a compact group determined to do battle. Lulham was demoted, Dexter Patterson joined the fight, followed by Genis Civico (FA Kart / Parilla) and Michelotto. Thompson was paying the price for his aggressiveness and went over the grass with help from an adversary. Edgar crossed the finish line first ahead of Michelotto and Civico.

Subsequent application of several penalties, mostly for spoiler movement, changed the ranking and it was Michelotto who was declared the winner in front of Lulham and Thompson. Maloney and Sasse completed the top five of this epic race.
