Selection in progress in Genk before the Finals

The road towards the Finals, in schedule tomorrow, has nearly arrived at its end in Genk. Only few heats still to be raced at the second round of the CIK-FIA European Championship. These last Heats will be run tomorrow morning. After the end of this stage we will know the participants and the grids of the last races. The situation is very fluid in both KZ and KZ2 categories, involved in the Championship for the European title. Also the CIK-FIA Academy Trophy- at its season-opener – has been, so far, full of surprises and the final result of the event remains uncertain. In all the categories, in fact, the best drivers in Qualifying had to cope with very strong and pugnacious opponents, making the result of the Heats uncertain until the very end, with substantially no-one who managed to pull away from the rest of the pack. Tomorrow morning, at the end of the Heats, we will have a first picture of the situation before the Finals (starting from 01.45pm), the last act of this Belgian weekend.

The final stage live in streaming from Genk.
The last day of the event will be streamed live on the web channels cikfiachampionship.com and cikfia.tv. The streaming will start at 10:00am with the last Heats. The streaming will finish at 04:40pm, after the Finals. The next appointment is on Motorsport TV, which will air a special report of the round from 23rd May.

Hajek and Kremers winners in KZ.
In KZ, the Finnish Simo Puhakka (Kosmic-Vortex-Bridgestone, in the photo on top) scored the pole position with 51″778, but in the heats the Czech Patrik Hajek (Kosmic-Vortex) and the Dutch Marijn Kremers (BirelArt-TM) had the upper hand. The Italian Paolo De Conto (CRG-TM-Bridgestone), reigning World Champion, can aim at a good position on the starting grid of the Final after scoring two second places, but there is still the last heat to race tomorrow morning.

Köhler ahead in KZ2, but there are lots of frontrunners.
Leon Köhler (Tony Kart-Vortex-Bridgestone, in the photo above) had a good start in KZ2: he stopped the clock at 52″593 and grabbed the pole. In the heats the German driver confirmed his excellent performance and won three races, even though the French Tom Leuillet and the Italian Alex Irlando (both on Sodi-TM) are in close pursuit: both the drivers won two heats and they are, together with Köhler, the frontrunners of the remaining three races in schedule tomorrow morning.

Fight between Handsaeme and van Vugt in Academy.
The pole position in practice, set in 55″954, was the stepping stone for the Belgian Xavier Handsaeme, who also managed to win two heats. However, the Dutch Mike van Vugt is in good position too: he set the third time in qualifying and then won the other two heats (all the drivers on Exprit-Vortex-Bridgestone). Tomorrow morning the remaining two heats.
