Present from the origins of karting, the Briton Paul Fletcher was first a renowned Driver – third in the 1969 World Championship – before becoming a team manager who has experienced many successes. He has also created and constantly improved the most beautiful English circuit, which also bears his name, PF International. Well known for his strong opinions, he looks at the evolution of his favourite sport.

Mr. Fletcher, can we start with a brief look back?

– Why not! I became interested in karting on its first appearance, probably only six months after its creation. My racing career lasted 25 years, until 1985. I had the opportunity to win many times, and especially to have interesting encounters. We meet great people in this sport, you know!

What do you miss from this glorious time?

– I’m not speaking of myself, but of karting. It was a fabulous sport, accessible and spectacular. Originally, you couldn’t imagine more basic equipment, and that is what has made it successful. We have lost the fundamental importance of this simplicity.

You therefore support the trend started with the new CIK-FIA OK engines?

– It does not go far enough! Kees van de Grint is a longtime friend and I respect his work. But he was probably forced to compromise.

What is the current state karting in the UK?

– We must not complain. Our country seems to have weathered the general economic situation better than some others. We have a lot of races, excellent categories and highly skilled Drivers due to clever choices for the very young.

Your track is a benchmark in Great Britain. How can you improve further?

– I created this circuit when I sold my business. And since then I have done all I can to develop the facilities for us. The facilities are now very good, the track was extended with the construction of the bridge in 2011, and it is also the longest circuit of the UK. This year we installed a giant screen to inform the public. Honestly, I think we did the maximum!
