CIK Best-of 2014: Norris, a precocious talent

Lando Norris was 14 years old when he was crowned CIK-FIA World KF Champion at Aunay-les-Bois (FRA), which made him the youngest Driver to win a title at this level. It was still not his first major title as he won the CIK-FIA European Championship in KF-Junior in 2013 and had previously won in every category he raced in since 2009. The youngest Driver entered, but also the smallest in size in the KF category, Lando was always very fast. His undeniable world victory also proved that he was able to dominate against the most experienced Drivers in Karting.

How did the World Championship start?
– It all started during the testing we did a few weeks before the Race. I was not the fastest during Free Practice, but the team worked hard and I managed to set the second fastest time in Qualifying. I was able to keep second position at the end of the Qualifying Heats, but Nielsen was very strong at that time. It is not very easy to overtake on this track.

On Sunday morning, it was raining on the track …
– In fact, it changed everything. There was a lot of fighting in the Prefinal. I managed to take 2nd place, but Joyner was very effective and he got away. Of course the Final was most important. The first few laps were very lively! I did not take any more risks than was necessary behind my team-mate Daruvala, preferring to get a little bit of a gap ahead of our pursuers. I took the lead at the halfway point. Everything worked fine, I was able to get a lead and I won with the fastest lap. Winning the World Championship in my first year in KF, what more could I hope for?

What are your plans for 2015?
– This was probably my last Karting Competition. I think I have proved myself! I will now move to single-seater racing in the F4 Championship.
