CIK Best-of 2014: Historic Karts

Increasingly popular with enthusiasts and the public, Historic Karts are now an integral part of some CIK-FIA events. Two major events punctuate the season: the CIK-FIA International Super Cup for Historic Karts and the Coppa dei Campioni.

On track and in the paddock, it’s an opportunity to discover or re-discover these wonderful machines that have made the history of the discipline and which built it’s reputation. The restoration, maintenance and driving of these machines requires an uncommon passion that brings together several generations in the same spirit through the timeless values of work, respect and memory.

The Coppa dei Campioni is traditionally held in May on the Pista Azzura at Jesolo (ITA). This year it brought together more than 120 enthusiasts of 6 different nationalities together to show off their equipment and participate in track demonstrations. Organized by the Automotoclub Storico Italiano in accordance with the CIK-FIA guidelines applicable to historic karts, the event was followed with passion. It was great to see not only champions from the past but also innovative equipment designers and famous engine preparators share stories of the past.

Launched in 2013 at the CIK-FIA World Championship for KZ at Varennes-sur-Allier (FRA), the CIK-FIA International Super Cup for Historic Karts saw it’s second running again in France at the CIK-FIA World Championships for KF and KF-Junior at Aunay-les-Bois in September. 34 older machines illustrated some of the history of karting, from it’s origins to the 80s, under the eyes of the many young drivers gathered at the Competition. The weather, not always helpful, didn’t dampen the enthusiasm of the fans who watched exciting demonstrations on the track. The display of the equipment in a strategic point at the Aunay-les-Bois site gave the Historic Karts a good audience.
