Euro Cup FR 2.0: De Vries back to his winning ways

Nyck de Vries (Koiranen GP) has become the first driver to win two races in the Eurocup Formula Renault 2.0 this season. On this Saturday and on a wet track surface, the Dutchman and member of the McLaren Young Driver Development Programme got the better of pole winner, Alexander Albon (KTR) to triumph at the Nürburgring. In finishing third, Jack Aitken (Fortec Motorsports) claimed his maiden podium result in the category. With the victory, Nyck de Vries now has a 40-point lead in the general classification.

This morning, Alexander Albon claimed his first pole position of the season, nearly a year after his previous at the Red Bull Ring in 2013. The member of the Lotus F1 Junior Team was joined on the front row by Nyck de Vries, while Nick Cassidy (Koiranen GP) and Andrea Pizzitola (Manor MP Motorsport) lined up on row two.

The start was taken on a wet track. Nyck de Vries took the lead before the field reached the first corner ahead of Alexander Albon and Andrea Pizzitola. Levin Amweg (ART Junior Team) and Jack Aitken followed, the ladder having overtaken Nick Cassidy at the end of an incident-free first lap. The New Zealand native answered back in passing the two on the next lap.

Despite the difficult conditions, several battles throughout the field spiced up the race. On lap four, Levin Amweg and Matt Parry (Fortec Motorsports) made contact while battling for sixth place. On the following lap, Andrea Pizzitola got it wrong, allowing both Nick Cassidy and Jack Aitken to gain a position. Cassidy then committed an error of his own on lap six.

Race leader, Nyck de Vries kept a cool head and took a six second margin of victory over Alexander Albon. Jack Aitken stepped on to the third step of the podium. Dennis Olsen (Prema Powerteam) was the best of the rest in fourth place. Charles Leclerc (Fortec Motorsports) took fifth ahead of Ignazio D’Agosto (Koiranen GP), Andrea Pizzitola, Nick Cassidy, Victor Franzoni (China BRT by JCS) and Kevin Jörg (Josef Kaufmann Racing) completed the top ten.

Quotes

Nyck de Vries : “I am very happy to win again with the team. We didn’t manage to turn our pole positions into wins, so it is a huge thrill to win again, especially with the tricky conditions. I now have pulled a gap in the championship, but it is not done until it’s done.”

Alexander Albon : “So far, it has been a good weekend. I am a bit disappointed about the start, too much wheelspin. Nyck was very quick, but I am pleased to finish second and hopefully tomorrow we get something better.”

Jack Aitken : “It was very tricky. I’d like to thank the team because they worked really hard through the night to allow us to get this result.
