U18 Prefinal 1: Giovinazzi 1st, Ovaska 3rd

Matthew Graham (Zanardi) started perfectly in prefinal one at the U18 World Championship at Sarno, as the sun returned and the track had dried somewhat. Antonio Giovinazzi (PCR) was soon in second position ahead of Dave Blom (Intrepid) and Tomi Katajamäki (Maranello). More surprisingly, Pyry Ovaska (Maranello) was already fifth. Anthoine Hubert (Sodi) spun shortly after the first corner, probably not alone, and was fired up. He set the fastest lap. Graham’s start was under investigation.

Giovinazzi went on the attack and he was leading with a good gap on lap 3 by 7”4. There was a comeback from Henry Easthope (Sodi), setting the fastest lap in third position while Blom fell to seventh. Leo Roussel (Sodi) was in the top 10. Easthope attacked Katajamäki going for second place. Ovaska gained another place, passing the fourth placed Jiri Forman (MS Kart). Graham was losing ground, now sixth. Easthope was accelerating, but Giovinazzi was far ahead. Ovaska had taken this time overcoming Katajamäki for third position. Hubert advanced to 12th.

Giovinazzi won the race ahead of Easthope and Ovaska who performed very well, and he will be well positioned for the upcoming race with his low place in the intermediate. Graham was sixth before a possible penalty, Roussel 9th, Clement Martin (Swiss Hutless) 12th. As well as the handling qualities necessary to succeed in the race, a perfect set-up was indispensable.
