Academy Race 1: Kremers wins, Leclerc recovers

There was a twist in the Academy Trophy: Charles Leclerc was in the distant rear of the pack on the second practice lap after a spin. He failed to take his place on the third lap and final lap, very upset. Benjamin Barnicoat took the lead at the first corner in front of Frederik Schandorff and Thiago Vivacqua. Dorian Boccolacci, was already fifth after starting 11th, and Leclerc also moved up to 11th after overtaking 17 drivers. Schandorff dropped back on turn 2, Marijn Kremers passed for second, Boccolacci was third, Vesvolod Gagen fourth. The top two were more than 5” ahead of 3rd.

Under investigation for his start, Vivacqua fell back to 13th position. Kremers took Barnicoat going into turn 4, Boccolacci comes spun in the grass and lost 10 places. Leclerc took eighth. Leclerc was hit severely by Filippos Kalesis and ended up 10th, just behind Boccolacci.

At halfway Kremers was a strong leader, 1.9s from Barnicoat. Gagen, was third, 7” behind second. It was heated between Aatu Moilanen and Juho Valtanen for fourth place. Mikel Azcona got a black flag and was excluded, but remained on track.

Kremers won the race ahead of Barnicoat and Valtanen who managed to pass Gagen, Moilanen was fifth, Leclerc was 6th after much trouble, Simon Mirguet seventh and Boccolacci eighth just ahead of Martin Ellegard.
