Despite threatening weather throughout the day, the qualifying for the KZ1 World Cup at Varennes-sur-Allier (F) took place on a dry track this afternoon.

Ardigo_Chronos.jpgWith a world title fight this weekend, the premier category of gearboxkarts promises a battle at all times. The first key moment of the weekend, qualifying has enabled the frontrunners to mark their territory. It is likely to be a duel between the factories of TonyKart and CRG. While Marco Ardigo (Tony Kart-Vortex), second in the 2007 event, took pole position, it was just ahead of Alessandro Manetti (CRG-Maxter) by 32 milliseconds. Arnaud Kozlinski and title holder Jonathan Thonon completed the CRG-Maxter fleet ahead of Andrea Benedetti, the second Tony Kart driver.

It was back to 6th position to find a kart that wasn’t green or black. The youngster Norman Nato (Intrepid-TM) was a sensation, confirming his good performance in the European Championship. At 16 years old, the Frenchman outpaced the experienced Davide Foré (Maranello-Maxter) and two other youngsters, the vice-champion of Europe Rick Dreezen (CRG-Maxter) and Finland’s Matias Laine (Tony Kart-Vortex). But with 7 pilots in less than 7 hundredths of a second, the fight for the top 10 was heated and the qualifying heats this Saturday are worth their weight in gold… Especially if it rains!
