Varutti makes the right choice

Wet or slick tyres? That was the question the day after the downpour which showered the last session of timed practice for KF2 yesterday. The majority of drivers chose slicks on a track still damp at the start.

Thomas Mich and Norman Nato led at the start, with Mich escaping quickly. Anthony Abbasse was immediately attacked by Enzo Zefirini for third place. Two laps later, Zefirini managed to pass Nato so he was second. Christophe Benoit overtook Abbasse, followed by Julien Le Brigand and Benjamin Bailly. Abbasse lost ground though while Bailly disappeared.

Varutti-pref-sam.jpgIn mid-race, it was realised that rain tyres were no longer right for a track now bathed in sunlight. Alban Varutti started 11th and was slow at the start on a still-wet race track, but began to put in very good times at a high speed. It was not yet clear whether there would be enough laps left for him to take the lead.

Overtaking two or three drivers every lap, Varutti went into sixth on the 11th lap and Mich was overwhelmed by Le Bragand and Benoit. Varutti took fourth place, then second at the start of the last lap. He succedded in passing Benoit on the last lap and took the win ahead of Benoit, Le Brigand, Mich, Zefirini and Nato. Gianni Gazurelli started 21st and made the same choice as Varutti and finished seventh.
