Academy: Maslennikov wins the B final

Reserved for drivers who didn’t get into the top 28 in the Academy Trophy, the B final struggled to complete the starting procedure and the race director was obliged to put the red flag out to remind them of the rules …

After some palaver in the sun, the race is on. Florescu took Lundgaard and escaped at the front, leaving the pack to battle, Larry and Von Schvedin at the front of it in 2nd, then Henry and Weckström. Maslennikov soon took second place ahead of Larry, Weckstöm, Henry and Clay. Von Schvedin retired after being heckled in the scuffle. Maslennikov gained several tenths on the leader at every corner. A laggard, a driver, in a combination yellow and black, with a white helmet, passed two drivers, in yellow and black suits, and white helmets.

Maslennikov was 1.6” from Florescu shortly after halfway, Henry was third by more than 2 seconds, Clay 4th, Lundgaard 5th, Weckström 6th, both under investigation for the start. At this rate, Maslennikov should reach Florescu on the 14th of 16 laps. The Russian took the lead with two laps remaining. Florescu maintained the suspense until the line where the Russian won against his Romanian opponent.
