First préparations in Macau

The last two Championships of the 2011 CIK-FIA season will be fought out on Coloane Island, Macau, China, this weekend. They are the Asia-Pacific Championships for KF1 (the principal category) and KF3 (the young hopefuls). An intriguing mix of Asian Drivers and top Europeans will come together to battle for the final honours of the season.

It is another opportunity for Belgian Yannick De Brabander (Parolin-TM) to win a championship in 2011. The Belgian was Vice-Champion in both the KZ1 World Cup and the KZ1 European Championship. He switches from the gearbox KZ1 class to direct-drive KF1 but was not particularly optimistic coming into the first Non-Qualifying Practice session. “It is a long time since I drove on these tyres and I am not sure what to expect. But I drove in both classes in Las Vegas this year and made both podiums, but I think this will be tough.” The only lady racer in the event, Laura Tillett of Great Britain (CRG-Maxter), returns to the scene of one of her best races last year. “I like this track. It suits my driving style. My dad isn’t here this weekend, but I would love to make the podium and go back home and show him the trophy. It would be the best Christmas present I could think of.”

In the KF3 Championship, Macau Driver (Andy) Wing Chung Chang (Tony Kart-Vortex) will carry the hopes of the local supporters. He has made steady progress all year having competed in the 2011 CIK-FIA Academy-Trophy but had some reservations. “Yes, I am aware that I am the only Driver from Macau and so that will put some pressure on me. I have driven on this track many times but it is not my favourite or one of my best. I will however try hard and my target is to finish in the top 3.

Non-Qualifying practice sessions are scheduled throughout Thursday and Friday and both categories will have Qualifying Practice and their first two Qualifying Heats on Saturday, before the 3rd and last 4th Heats and the Finals on Sunday.
