Ignazio D’Agosto (Tony Kart / Vortex) started without problems from his pole position in race 1 at the World KF1 at Suzuka, followed like a shadow by his teammate Flavio Camponeschi. There was a super start from Nyck De Vries (Zanardi / Parilla) who quickly took 7th position, after starting from 14th. D’Agosto was away, but Karol Basz (RK / BMB) closed on Camponeschi and attacked. Zdenek Groman (Kosmic / Vortex) stayed in fourth position as the engine wouldn’t let him pass because of poor carburetion.
De Vries upped the pace after a few laps and was on the bumper of Alexander Albon (Intrepid / TM), who was then fourth. He passed with two laps to go, but the British driver came back well on the last lap.
It was a clear victory for Polish driver Basz on his birthday in front of D’Agosto and Camponeschi. But a penalty was awarded before the podium ceremony, D’Agosto lost second place in favor of Camponeschi, with a penalty of 2”at the start. That improved Camponeschi’s chances in the Championship.
