The FIA Prize Giving Gala took place in Monaco on friday, december 10th. The CIK FIA Championship awards were the first to be presented.
Nyck de Vries, a member of the Formula One McLaren Young Driver Development Programme was awarded the CIK FIA World Karting Championship trophy. The 15 year old was presented with the award by CIK FIA President Sheikh Abdulla bin Isa Al Khalifa.
De Vries said:
“Being the World Karting Champion is something I have dreamt about since I began competing. The World Championship was difficult and in the final we had opted for a new set-up. Jordan Chamberlain took the lead at the start and, honestly, I really thought that I was never going to catch up with him. Then in the last four laps the gap was reduced. When I saw the “Last lap” board I said to myself that I just had to try something; the opportunity to win the World Championship might never arise again. And I made it!”
Jake Dennis received the U18 World Karting Championship trophy. This was the first year that this new FIA competition took place. The championship is intended to encourage drivers under 18 years of age to compete by limiting racing costs and providing additional educational programmes in conjunction with the FIA Institute.
The CIK FIA Karting Academy Trophy was presented to 14 year old Niklas Tiihonen. The competition was run over three events with over 33 nations taking part, driving identical karts.
