Thonon takes major points

There was another celebration for CRG in KZ1 Race 1. Jonathan Thonon made a cautious start and Arjan Kievitsbosch took the lead, followed by Andrea Benedetti. Thonon was third to Rick Dreezen. Norman Nato could have made a superb start, but his team-mate Roberto Toninelli had the same idea and they both moved into the middle of the track. Nato was ninth, just behind Alessandro Manetti. It didn’t take them long to join and then pass Toninelli, before moving coser to Thomas Mich in fifth.

Thonon-C1.jpgOn the fourth lap, as might be expected, Thonon and Benedetti made their move – as might be expected the Belgian contingent encouraged him loudly. On the following lap, Dreezen took Benedetti and Manetti moved ahead of Mich. Nato reduced the gap to Toninelli but Alessandro Piccini followed the Intrepids closely. Manetti passed Benedetti smoothly and there were no less than four CRGs at the head of the race.

Under pressure from Piccini, Nato attacked Toninelli, but their karts touched with Toninelli retiring and Nato pushed down to 11th. This put Mich as Piccini’s next target in seventh. Bas Lammers remained stuck in the pack since the start of the race, around tenth. His kart didn’t seem quick and he was losing ground. Is this where the championship was decided? Piccini found a gap beside Mich and Manetti tried to attack Dreezen without success. Dreezen was revitalised and passed Kievitsbosch.

Manetti also made several attacks on Kievitsbosch, but was unsuccessful and returned to third place. Piccini threatened Benedetti, Puhakka closed on Mich, Laudato on Nato and Renaudie on Carlton. These battles made the end of the race more exciting. In the end, Manetti took the place from Kievitsbosch and Piccini passed.

Victory went to Thonon ahead of Dreezen and Manetti.
