A top five for Charles Milesi to close the year

Charles Milesi’s 2018 season in Formula Renault Eurocup ended on 22nd and 23rd October at the Barcelona circuit. Fast and combative, the young French hopeful made his presence felt in Race 1 moving up to 5th, before having to be satisfied with 10th position in Race 2. 7th in the final Championship standings and 5th best rookie, Charles can draw a very encouraging record of his first season at this very high level of competition in single-seaters.

A perfectly managed race

Not particularly pleased with his Free Practice time in the dry, Charles Milesi faced rainy conditions during Saturday’s Qualifying session, which set the starting grid for Race 1. “It was not an easy session, because I needed to adapt very quickly to the slippery track. I finished with the 5th time in my group,” said Charles.

The track was dry again for the first of two races of the meeting. The Bourguignon driver made a great start from his 5th inside line and managed to gain a place. A few bends later, he made another pass, then another, and finished the first lap in 6th position. “Charles made the right choices at the start of the race and was able to win against his rivals,” confirmed Julien Abelli of Simumotion, the organisation that assists Charles throughout the year.

Behind him, a collision led to a safety car period. “I managed the restart very well, which allowed me to overtake an opponent at the next braking, to finally cross the finish line in 5th position. It was a very good race,” continued Charles.

5th best rookie of 2018

The next day, he finished the Qualifying session in the same place as the day before. “There was a lot of traffic, I only managed to find one clear lap. In the end, I did not finish too badly.” Alas, Race 2 would not be as convincing as the first one. “My pace was not fast enough. I lost a place on the first lap, then there was a gap to the leading pack. That did not change my Championship standings, but I would have liked to have finished better than 10th.

Thanks to his many strong positions during the season, including several podiums and two victories in Monaco and at Silverstone, Charles Milesi finally finished 7th in the very competitive 2018 Formula Renault Eurocup, out of a total of 31 drivers. But above all, he is 5th in the Rookie standings, in addition to having contributed to the team title won by Thibaut De Merindol’s R-ace GP team.

As for the future, Charles Milesi and his supporters want to give themselves time to choose the best option for 2019 …
